Pyro City began in 1964 in a small town that barely made it on the map.  David and John Collar, 15 and 18 respectively, decided a fireworks stand would be a great summer job.  John was in it for the potential profit and David was more concerned about impressing his girlfriend whose dad sold fireworks.  Their first stand was 6’ by 10’.  During that steamy Midwest summer they both made $235 dollars.  This was more than they could make all summer mowing lawns so they thought they had it made.

They continued to build their stand locations and in 1979 they formed Winco Fireworks.  At this time their retail consisted of mostly tents and a few small stores. As time passed they continued to build their image and began to control more and more of the market share. Their first warehouse store was Fireworks Importers LTD in Lone Jack, MO.  Once they saw the success of this building they decided to develop more permanent locations.

If you would have asked David and John in 1964 if they thought they would end up as the Largest Distributor of Black Cat Fireworks they would have laughed.  They just wanted some extra money to mess around with and David wanted to get to second base!  To their surprise Black Cat and Winco Fireworks teamed up in 1992.  In one year they went from importing 5,000 cases to 20,000 cases. After this increase in sales it only took a few years for Winco to beat out the other top five BC distributors.  As Winco developed their business the family also expanded into the industry.  Winco Fireworks became a true family business including John, David their brother Mike, sisters and even their children.  They began to run out of family members to include in the business so they made sure to bring on individuals who they would grow to appreciate like family.  This was the beginning of it all; with Black Cat and a strong system of people by their side Winco began developing wholesale and retail locations across the country.
